O Avenged Sevenfold começou tocando metalcore em seus dois primeiros álbuns mas após alguns anos a banda mudou seu estilo musical no álbum City Of Evil e hoje é considerada uma das melhores bandas de metal da década assim como seus álbuns , chegando até ter o City Of Evil como um dos melhores álbuns do século. O novo álbum se chama "Nightmare" foi lançado no dia 27 de julho de 2010. O álbum contou com Mike Portnoy, ex-baterista do Dream Theater, por ser o maior ídolo de The Rev. Portnoy criou e gravou as linhas de bateria do Nightmare, além de participar das apresentações ao vivo.
Estilo
O Avenged Sevenfold é caracterizado como uma banda ligada ao heavy metal. Mas suas músicas apresentam os mais diversos e diferenciados tipos, percebendo-se isto especialmente no álbum Avenged Sevenfold. Por exemplo, em seu primeiro álbum que era metalcore podemos perceber a música Streets que tem uma sonoridade mais puxado para o estilo punk rock, a música To End The Rapture com características Heavy Metal e Warmness On The Soul em piano numa linha mais Soft Rock. Também em seu álbum homônimo, as músicas Dear God e o início de Gunslinger tem uma sonoridade country, A Little Piece Of Heaven no mesmo álbum apresenta elementos teatrais, num estilo diferente de qualquer outra música, usando orquestra e instrumentos pouco comuns no rock. O Avenged Sevenfold não se consideram com um estilo específico apesar de serem um dos maiores expoentes do New Wave of American Metal. Eles mudaram muito desde seu primeiro álbum, passando de uma música muito pesada para algo mais hard rock. Nome da banda,letras & etc.
O nome Avenged Sevenfold (vingado sete vezes, em português) é uma referência ao livro do Gênesis na Bíblia, quando Caim é sentenciado a viver em exílio por matar seu irmão. Deus o marcou e ninguém poderia matá-lo pelo seu pecado. Quem matasse Caim seria "castigado sete vezes" e assim, Caim seria vingado sete vezes. O título da canção Chapter Four se refere ao Gênesis 4:15, o capítulo da Bíblia onde a história de Abel e Caim se passa. Beast and the Harlot é outra canção derivada de assuntos bíblicos, que vem do Livro da Revelação, escrito em primeira pessoa e que tem como enredo a punição da Grande Babilônia, império mundial e centro de falsas religiões. Outra referência bíblica está em The Wicked End; a canção aborda o tema de Adão e Eva afirmando que Adão não estava certo ao comer o fruto proibido. A banda também possui letras políticas como Critical Acclaim, Blinded In Chains e M.I.A, letras melancólicas como Seize The Day, Warmness On the Soul e I Won't See You Tonight (Part:1) . O A7X também se caracteriza por ser uma banda rica liricamente tratando de diversos assuntos em suas letras.
Sobre a mudança de estilo e as acusações de se vender, M.Shadows disse: "Essas pessoas me lembram a mim mesmo quando eu tinha treze anos e chamava as bandas de vendidas. Nós apenas escrevemos o que está em nossos corações e fazemos o melhor possível. Nós não somos a Microsoft, não estamos tentando fazer IPods e fornecê-los para as pessoas. Nós vamos escrever o que está em nossos corações, em nossas almas para as pessoas escutarem e gostarem. É para isso que estamos aqui. Nós somos apenas uma banda, somos apenas cinco garotos tendo um bom momento e colocando nossos corações na linha. E jamais lançaríamos, nem em um milhão de anos, algo que não viesse de nosso corações, apenas por lançar. Quando os garotos nos chamam de vendidos, geralmente são jovens ou estão confusos ou furiosos por que não é o mesmo som do álbum anterior. Talvez um dia eles fiquem mais velhos e pensem que nós estamos longe de ser vendidos. Nós sempre fizemos o que queríamos e a gravadora jamais nos dirá o que colocar em um álbum. Então, um dia eles crescerão e perceberão que eles não gostaram do álbum mas não precisam nos chamar de vendidos. Acho que, hoje em dia, ser chamado de vendido é normal. As pessoas chamarão você de vendido, não importando o que faça."
Sobre a origem do sentimento para compor letras políticas como Critical Acclaim, M.Shadows disse: "Acho que vem das muitas queixas sobre o nosso país ultimamente. A mídia é muito unilateral. É, uma mídia muito liberal que está sempre reclamando, achando que todos estão contra eles e eles meio que perdem a visão da natureza humana e do elemento humano. Atualmente, há pessoas lutando e defendendo nosso país, há pessoas em nosso país fazendo crescer nossa comida… frutas e vegetais. Eles estão pegando nossa comida e levando-as por todo país em caminhões para que as pessoas possam comer. Em todo o lugar desse país, e acho que as pessoas esquecem desse elemento humano e chega a um ponto em que fico suficientemente irritado. Tenho amigos suficiente nas forças armadas, lutando por este país e isso me deixou irritado suficiente para que eu quisesse escrever uma música sobre isso."
O Deathbat
O logo oficial da banda é o Deathbat, uma caveira com asas. Foi originalmente criado por um amigo de escola dos integrantes, Micah Montague. Cam Rackam, outro amigo, também fez diversos tipos de Deathbats e algumas pinturas como o single da música Beast and the Harlot assim como Casey Howard que fez o design do logo para a Fall Tour com a banda Buckcherry em 2008, o Abraham Deathbat. C.Howard também fez os desenhos interiores do encarte do álbum Avenged Sevenfold de 2007. O símbolo aparece em diversos álbuns como Waking The Fallen e Avenged Sevenfold e em singles como Critical Acclaim e Bat Country. O Deathbat está sempre presente nos shows, nas palhetas e fundos de palcos e também é a tatuagem mais comum entre os fãs da banda.
Avenged Sevenfold is an American rock band from Huntington Beach, California, formed in 1999. The band consists of vocalist M. Shadows, lead guitarist Synyster Gates, rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance , bassist Johnny Christ.
Avenged Sevenfold emerged with a metalcore sound on their debut Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, which included primarily screamed vocals. The band changed their style on their third album and first major label release, City of Evil, which features more melodic vocals and power ballads. The band continued to explore new sounds with their self titled release and enjoyed continued mainstream success before their drummer, James "The Rev" Sullivan, died of heart disease and combined effect of drugs and alcohol in his body in 2009. Despite his death, the band continued on with help of then Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and released their fifth album Nightmare in 2010 which debuted on the top spot of the Billboard 200, a first for the band.
To date, Avenged Sevenfold has released five studio albums, one live album/compilation/DVD, and fifteen singles. The band themselves have received much credit for their worldwide mainstream success and were most notably proclaimed as one of the leaders and key bands in the New Wave of American Heavy Metal and were featured as second place on Ultimate Guitar's Top Ten Bands of the Decade.
Genre
Avenged Sevenfold's material spans multiple genres and has evolved over the band's ten year career. Initially, the band's debut album Sounding the Seventh Trumpet consisted almost entirely of metalcore sound; however, there were several deviations to this genre, most notably in "Streets" which adopts a punk style and "Warmness on the Soul," which is a piano-oriented ballad. On Waking the Fallen, the band displayed the contemporary metalcore style once more, but added more clean vocals as well as more mature and intricate musical elements. In the band's DVD All Excess, producer Andrew Mudrock explained this transition: "When I met the band after Sounding the Seventh Trumpet had come out before they had recorded Waking the Fallen, M. Shadows said to me 'This record is screaming. The record we want to make is going to be half-screaming half-singing. I don't want to scream anymore. And the record after that is going to be all singing.'"
On City of Evil, Avenged Sevenfold's third album, the band chose to abandon the metalcore genre, developing a more hard rock style. Avenged Sevenfold's self-titled album, again, consists of several deviations to less consistent genres and styles from the album's main hard rock and heavy metal songs, most notably in "Dear God", which adopts a country style and "A Little Piece of Heaven", which is circled within the influence of Broadway show tunes, using primarily brass instruments and stringed orchestra to take over most of the role of the lead and rhythm guitar. Nightmare contains further deviations, including a piano ballad called "Fiction" and a brief return to their metalcore roots on "God Hates Us". The band has changed considerably since their first album, in which during that time they have been characterized as a heavy band with a screamed and growled vocal style combined with clean vocals, chugging guitar riffs and breakdowns that one can expect from the metalcore genre.

The band has also cited bands such as Bad Religion, Guns N' Roses, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Dream Theater, Metallica, NOFX, Alice in Chains, Black Flag, Corrosion of Conformity, The Misfits, Slayer, The Vandals, Rage Against the Machine, Korn, Deftones, and AFI as their artistic influences.
Band name and lyrical content
In an interview for Skratch Magazine M. Shadows said "the name itself comes from the Bible. It's basically the first murder on Earth between Cain and Abel. [The name is a] 'what goes around, comes around' sort of thing. And just so there is no confusion, Avenged Sevenfold is not a religious band." The part of the bible where the name comes is Genesis (King James Bible) – specifically Genesis 4:15, where Cain is sentenced to life in exile for murdering his brother. "And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him".[59][original research?] The abbreviation "A7X" for their band name was the idea of guitarist Zacky Vengeance. The title of Avenged Sevenfold's song "Chapter Four" refers to the fourth chapter of Genesis, in which the story of Cain and Abel takes place. The song's subject also appears to be this story. "Beast and the Harlot", yet another song derived from the Bible, comes from the Book of Revelation only it is written in the first person and refers to the punishment of Babylon the Great, world empire and seat of false religion.
Another biblical reference occurs in the song "The Wicked End". In this song, several times it is said "dust the apple off, savor each bite, and deep inside you know Adam was right." making reference to Eve eating the forbidden fruit. Although the band's title and members' stage names make references to religion, Shadows stated in an interview that they are not a religious band. "Anyone that reads the lyrics and really knew anything about us, they would know we're not promoting either," he said. "That's one thing about this band that I love is that we never really shove any kind of, like, political or religious beliefs on people. We just, the music's there to entertain and maybe thought-provoking on both sides, but we don't try to, like, really shove anything down anyone's throat. There's too many bands that do that nowadays, I think."[60] The band has a few songs that are somewhat political in nature like "Critical Acclaim", "Gunslinger" and "Blinded in Chains". The song "Betrayed" off of their album City of Evil was written about "Dimebag Darrell's death".
The Deathbat
The band sports a logo known as the "Deathbat". It was originally designed by an artistic high school friend of Avenged Sevenfold, Micah Montague, as seen on the band's first DVD, All Excess. The Deathbat has appeared on all of the band's album covers, many of which were done by Cameron Rackam, a close friend of the band. The Deathbat has developed from just being a skull with bat wings, to sometimes appear as a full "man size" skeleton with bat wings, as it can be seen at the cover of albums City of Evil and Nightmare and on singles "Dear God" and "Scream". On Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, there are pictures of two people (in which appear to be Cain and Abel), another angel-like human and a semi-opaque Deathbat below it, several Deathbats appear on the back cover of the album as well. The Deathbat also appears on covers of number of singles such as "Bat Country", "Warmness on the Soul" and "Critical Acclaim".
