Alvin man suspected in car burglaries now facing child porn charges

FRIENDSWOOD, Texas—A 21-year-old Alvin man suspected in two Friendswood car burglaries is now facing child pornography charges.

Friendswood police said Thomas Brantley Collins and an accomplice went from house to house in the Forest of Friendswood subdivision on the night of February 1, checking for unlocked vehicles.

Investigators said two cars were burglarized that night, and the stolen items included an Apple iPhone, some cash, credit cards and textbooks.

Police said the suspects then went to a local department store to make purchases with the stolen cards. The license plate of Collins’ black pickup was caught by surveillance cameras there, and police were able to identify him as a suspect.

A warrant for burglary of a motor vehicle was issued for Collins in Galveston County.

Two weeks later, on February 14, a tipster notified police that Collins was visiting his valentine at Alvin High School.

Officers tracked him down and arrested him. Police said Collins had the stolen iPhone with him when he was booked into the Friendswood jail, but the phone had been modified for his personal use.

Investigators said Collins was using the phone to store child pornography.

When interviewed, police said Collins admitted to the vehicle burglaries.

Collins will be transferred to the Galveston County Jail, where he will be held on a total bond of $3,000 for the burglary charges and $250,000 for the child porn charge.

Police said they plan to issue warrants for Collins’ accomplice soon.

Gavin and Stacey star Margaret John dies

The national treasure, who played Doris in the Barry-set sitcom, is understood to have passed away in her sleep at around 2am this morning.

Peter Watkins-Hughes directed her in his bawdy comedy a Bit of Tom Jones.

He said: “She was the grandmother everyone wanted and a friend to everyone.”

She was understood to have celebrated her 84th birthday in December.

Margaret John (1926 - 2 February 2011) was a Welsh actress. When growing up she wanted to be a nurse or a vet but went to train at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art instead. In a career that spanned over fifty years, John appeared in some of Britain's most successful television shows, including Coronation Street, Dixon of Dock Green, Z-Cars, Doctor Who, Emmerdale, Last of the Summer Wine, Crossroads, Little Britain, and Gavin & Stacey.
Other notable television roles included The First Lady, The Troubleshooters, Menace, Softly, Softly, The Mike Yarwood Show, Doomwatch, Blake's 7, Secret Army, The District Nurse, Lovejoy, My Family, High Hopes, Tea and Biscuits with Maggie Pritchard and, on radio, Linda Smith's A Brief History of Timewasting. She played the part of Mrs Stone, the school secretary, throughout the original King Street Junior series on Radio 4.
John also appeared on television in The Mighty Boosh and as the frank librarian in Little Britain. She is perhaps most famous, however, for her role as Doris, the surprisingly blunt and sensual elderly neighbour of Gwen and Nessa, in the cult BBC TV series Gavin and Stacey. In September 2009 John appeared in the graphic short film "Cow" by director Peter Watkins Hughes warning of the dangers of texting while driving.
At the 18th BAFTA Cymru Film, Television and Interactive Media Awards on 17 May 2009. At the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay, in a ceremony hosted by Gethin Jones, John was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
In 2009 John appeared in "The Vagina Monologues", when she had to fake orgasms, before which her last theatre production was in the 1980s in "Medea" at London's Young Vic Theatre where she played opposite Dame Eileen Atkins. John is to appear in the stage production of "Calendar Girls" at the Wales Millennium Centre from 27 July to 7 August 2010 and at Venue Cymru, Llandudno from 9 to 14 August 2010, alongside fellow Welsh actress Ruth Madoc, playing Lady Cravenshire, the judge of the WI’s cake competition.
John's husband was first violinist with the London Symphony Orchestra and performed with Frank Sinatra.

Langston Hughes, Cab Calloway and Illinois

If you want a key to 20th century African American culture — and, for that, matter, to 20th century American culture — you could do worse than Langston Hughes, who was born today in 1902 in Joplin, Mo.

This poet, journalist, essayist and literary translator does it all: His career spans the Harlem Renaissance, the Great Depression, and the postwar period even as he travels to Europe and seeks his roots in Africa and grapples with American racism. And, of course, the concerns of his writing are as global as his travels: Hope, history and gap between the haves and have-nots. 

Interestingly, Hughes has an Illinois connection: While still a boy, he lived for a time in Lincoln, where he first started writing poetry. Illinois also figured in his first big break: While working as a busboy in Washington, D.C., Hughes placed  three poems beside the plate of Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay, who was then credited with discovering a new “Negro” poet. Thanks to that meeting, Hughes was eventually awarded a scholarship to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.

Hughes was deeply influenced by jazz and blues, so the Youtube tribute above — which  blends his poetry with images and music of Cab Calloway — is especially appropriate.

As many baseball fans learned yesterday, Rob Neyer wrote his last column for ESPN yesterday. We were informed we'd find out soon what Rob's next venture would be. As it turned out, Neyer's move has come close to our home here at SB Nation.

In fact, SB Nation is Rob Neyer's new home! He'll be the head of SB Nation's national baseball coverage. Rob Neyer (born June 22, 1966) is a baseball author. He started his career working for Bill James and STATS, and then joined ESPN.com as a columnist from 1996 to January 2011. A disciple of major sabermetrics figure Bill James, his writing is an outlet for everyday fans to gain insight that statistics-centered analysis can offer.

Early life

Neyer spent the early years of his childhood in the upper Midwest and later moved to the middle Midwest, close to the Kansas City area. He attended the University of Kansas, where he picked up a passion for baseball after reading Peter Golenbock's Bums: An Oral History of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Bill James Baseball Abstract 1984. Uninterested in school, Neyer left college during his fourth year and took a job roofing houses.

Writing career

Neyer was introduced to Bill James by a casual friend, Mike Kopf, nine months after dropping out of college. He was soon hired as a research assistant. Neyer's first project with James was helping compile material for the book This Time Let's Not Eat the Bones, a collection of material from the Abstracts. After four years under the tutelage of James, Neyer took a job at STATS, Inc., before joining ESPNet SportsZone, ESPN.com's forerunner, in 1996.Until 2004, Neyer's work was available without subscription. For a few years, it was part of the "Insider" service and could thus only be read with a paid subscription. Since 2007, the bulk of Neyer's ESPN work has shifted to his daily blog, which is no longer Insider-only.

On March 6, 2007 Neyer set the record for longest ESPN.com chat, at 6 hours and 37 minutes. The record was broken when Bill Simmons chatted for 7 hours and 4 minutes on November 28, 2007Neyer was able to regain the record from Simmons with a 12 hour and 1 minute chat on Opening Day of the 2008 baseball season, March 31, 2008;in his closing remark, he quoted Ring Lardner: "The race is not always to the swift nor the battle to the strong -- but that's the way to bet."

Neyer is the author or co-author of six books: Baseball Dynasties (2000) with Eddie Epstein, Feeding the Green Monster (2001), Rob Neyer's Big Book of Baseball Lineups (2003), The Neyer/James Guide to Pitchers (2004) with Bill James, Rob Neyer's Big Book of Baseball Blunders (2006), and Rob Neyer's Big Book of Baseball Legends (2008). He is on the 10-person voting panel for the Fielding Bible Awards, an alternative to the Gold Glove Awards in Major League Baseball

He is regularly cited in the "Keeping Score" column in the New York Times and elsewhere. Bill James describes him as "the best of the new generation of sportswriters. He knows baseball history like a child knows his piggy bank. He knows how to pick it up and shake it and make what he needs fall out."

Neyer currently lives in Portland, Oregon.He is a fan of the Kansas City Royals baseball team.

Neyer announced on January 31, 2011 that he was leaving ESPN after 15 years.

Distribuição global de endereços IPv4 chega ao estágio terminal

Com a cessão para a Ásia de dois grandes blocos de endereços, sobram apenas cinco, que serão repartidos igualmente entre as entidades regionais.

A Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), entidade que distribui números IP em âmbito global, cedeu dois grandes blocos de endereços IPv4 para o Centro de Informações de Rede da região da Ásia-Pacífico (APNIC), ativando assim a regra que vai determinar a distribuição dos blocos restantes de endereços IPv4.

A regra estabelece que, quando restarem apenas cinco grandes blocos de endereços IP, eles serão dados a cada uma das cinco entidades regionais de registro da Internet.

Com esta última alocação feita pela APNIC, o número de blocos de endereços IP restantes chega a cinco.

A IANA deve distribuir os blocos restantes em questão de dias. Depois disso, as entidades regionais não terão mais onde buscar novos endereços IPv4 quando seus respectivos estoques se esgotarem.

Os endereços IPv4 permitem o endereçamento de apenas 4,3 bilhões de IPs únicos na Internet – estes endereços são utilizados por computadores pessoais e servidores para se conectarem à Internet. Os endereços IPv4 restantes têm tido seu estoque reduzido nos últimos anos.

A última versão do protocolo Internet, a IPv6, tem um número praticamente ilimitado de endereços, mas ainda não é largamente utilizada.

Depois de a IANA alocar seus últimos lotes de endereços para as entidades regionais, os provedores de Internet e as empresas ainda poderão obter endereços dessas entidades, até que eles acabem. Um porta-voz da IANA afirmou na semana passada que os provedores estão acelerando seus pedidos de endereços à medida que o estoque chega ao fim.

A APNIC espera continuar a alocar normalmente seus endereços por no máximo seis meses, de acordo com um aviso publicado na segunda-feira em uma lista de usuários da Cisco. APNIC IPv4 allocation signals change in tack

Global internet registry hands out last two IPv4 "general use" blocks, set to allocate last five next week

After years of speculation around timing of what has been referred to as the “IPocalypse”, the internet protocol version 4 (IPv4) standard address stock has been exhausted.

Australia’s regional registry, the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC), acknowledged this morning that it had been allocated the final two /8 blocks of “general use” IPv4 stock - equating to approximately 33.6 million unique addresses - by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) on 1 February 2011.

“Reachability and routability testing of the new prefixes will commence soon,” an information notice from the regional registry reads.

The allocation triggers the automatic allocation of the final five blocks of IPv4 addresses by IANA to each of the five regional registries sometime this month.

It is an event APNIC chief scientist, Geoff Huston, has suggested could occur at one of the global meetings scheduled during February, potentially the V6 World Congress scheduled next week in Paris which will see members of the global and regional registries meet together.

IANA was contacted for clarification but did not respond at time of writing.

The allocation also signals the death of a protocol developed for the original Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) by Vint Cerf and others during the 1970s. When first developed, Cerf chose 4.3 billion addresses as the maximum amount of addresses when experimenting with the protocol, a choice he has since taken responsibility for.

APNIC expects allocations under the last two standard blocks to continue for up to six months. The final five blocks will be handled under altered policies which, under most existing protocols, means each /8 block will be divided into /22s - or 1024 addresses each - and allocated to businesses and providers as necessary.

Discussion among IPv6 and regional registry working groups have proposed policies dictating those allocated the final addresses must have a viable IPv6 migration procedure, however, no such policy has been adopted yet by any of the registries.

A scheduled meeting of APNIC members in Hong Kong later in the month will include further discussion about potential policy changes.

“These policies are all about reflecting a general industry consensus, so the original policy as we’re operating on now, was adopted by a general consensus of folk a couple of years ago,” Huston told Computerworld Australia following APNIC’s announcement.

APNIC used the allocation notification to further stress the need for migration to IPv6, which is expected to last the internet for decades. With 250 million IPv4 addresses consumed during 2010 and few providers publicly trialling or implementing IPv6 migration patterns, Huston said the transition to the new protocol will not happen as smoothly as originally intended.

“This is certainly an unforeseen situation,” he said. “Industry has now decided by its very actions that we’re going to do a dual stack transition without a plentiful supply of v4 addresses. That’s really hard.

“Right the way through IPv6, in almost every part we’ve tried to engineer a protocol that doesn’t have scarcity. So the blocks that folk get are enormous, the blocks that end customers get are intentionally enormous. Every part of v6 sort of splashes around addresses like they were confetti.”

As autoridades australianas declararam nesta quarta-feira estado de alerta máximo pela chegada ao leste do país do ciclone de categoria cinco "Yasi", considerado pelos meteorologistas um dos de maior força das últimas décadas.

Fontes oficiais informaram que o furacão circula agora pelo Mar de Coral rumo ao estado de Queensland, onde tocará a terra às 22h da hora local (10h de Brasília) em algum ponto entre as cidades litorâneas e turísticas de Port Douglas e Townsville.

Cerca de 300 mil pessoas já abandonaram suas casas e outras 300 mil estão ameaçadas pelas chuvas torrenciais e ventos de 280 km/h - e sequências de até 320 km/h - provocados pelo "Yasi".

O escritório de meteorologia de Queensland avisou aos cidadãos que o impacto "pode ser o mais perigoso em gerações", enquanto a líder estadual, Anna Bligh, assegurou que o ciclone será "o mais catastrófico da história".

Outra localidade litorânea em perigo é Cairns, situada em frente à Grande Barreira de Coral e onde helicópteros do Exército tiveram que evacuar os pacientes de dois hospitais e se preparam para fechar o aeroporto.

Nas últimas horas, o "Yasi" ganhou força e chegará com a categoria máxima, de cinco, à costa australiana.

A região ainda não se recuperou de outro desastre natural, as graves inundações que deixaram no leste do país o saldo de 35 mortos e pelo menos US$ 5,6 bilhões em danos desde novembro.

Sydney, Austrália, 01 fev (Lusa) -- As autoridades do Estado de Queensland, no nordeste da Austrália, aceleraram hoje a retirada de milhares de pessoas de localidades costeiras como medida preventiva face à chegada iminente do ciclone "Yasi", noticiou a agência noticiosa EFE.

"Não quero assustar as pessoas, nem causar pânico, mas todas as informações que me chegam é que enfrentamos um fenómeno potencialmente muito mortífero", disse a chefe do governo de Queensland, Anna Bligh, à estação de rádio ABC.

De acordo com os meteorologistas, o ciclone é um dos mais fortes das últimas décadas.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi is a tropical cyclone threatening northern Queensland, Australia. Yasi originated from a tropical low near Fiji. The system intensified to a Category 3 cyclone at about 5 pm on 31 January 2011.

Early on 26 January, the RSMC Nadi upgraded an area of low pressure into a Tropical Disturbance, giving it the identifier '09F'. The system slowly organised and Early the next day, RSMC Nadi further upgraded it into a Tropical Depression.According to the RSMC Nadi, the convection was too high and the Low-Level Circulation Center was difficult to locate. On 30 January, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) started monitoring the system as Tropical Cyclone '11P'.. A few hours later, RSMC Nadi upgraded Tropical Depression 09F into a Category 1 tropical cyclone, and gave it the name 'Yasi'. Yasi continued to strengthen and became a Category 2 Tropical Cyclone on 31 January. In just 6 hours, Yasi became a Severe Tropical Cyclone.[8] On that afternoon, both the JTWC and RSMC Nadi reported that the system crossed 160°E and entered the Australian region.

Preparations

By the time Yasi crossed into Australian basin, preparations for the storm were under way. Media outlets referred to the storm as "what could be the state's worst cyclone in history."

Because of its great size, many fear that the tropical cyclone could cause damage more severe than Cyclone Larry in 2006 and Cyclone Tracy, which nearly destroyed Darwin, in 1974. Thousands of residents in the path of the storm were urged to evacuate by Premier Anna Bligh.

The Red Bull RB7 is a Formula One racing car designed by Red Bull Racing for the 2011 season. It will be driven by defending champion Sebastian Vettel and Australian driver Mark Webber. The car is due to be released at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain on 1 February 2011. Sebastian Vettel will be the first driver to test the car.

World Champions Red Bull Racing have become the latest team to unveil their 2011 car ahead of the first pre-season tests which get underway in Valencia this morning.

Current World champion, Sebastian Vettel and team-mate Mark Webber were on hand to unveil the car on Tueday morning in the pit lane of the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia.

The Adrian Newey-designed car, which is called the RB7, features a high nose and a higher engine cover than its predecessor. Another difference is the concept rear wing.

The team are hoping that the Renault-powered RB7, will continue where it predecessor left off, after dominating the 2010 season, which saw the team snatch 15 out of a possible 19 pole positions, and help Sebastian Vettel claim his first ever championship title, as well as give the team its first ever constructors title.

Israel reforça fronteira com Egito por temer entrada de terroristas

Israel reforçou sua fronteira com o Egito perante o temor de que a situação de revolta popular que vive o país vizinho possa levar à infiltração de terroristas, além de beduínos e imigrantes africanos em busca de asilo.

A informação foi divulgada nesta terça-feira pelo jornal Ha'aretz, que detalha que tropas do Exército e agentes da Polícia de Fronteiras israelenses foram desdobrados ao longo do limite divisório com o Egito - de 250 km - para evitar que terroristas possam aproveitar a situação de caos no Egito para perpetrar ataques em Israel.

Outra das inquietações é que grupos de beduínos residentes na Península do Sinai possam sair do Egito para infiltrar-se em Israel, somando-se aos imigrantes de países africanos que nos últimos anos conseguiram entrar de forma ilegal no Estado judeu.

Por outra parte, meios da imprensa local informam nesta terça-feira que Israel aprovou o destacamento de tropas egípcias no Sinai, uma zona que, segundo o acordo de paz assinado pelos dois países em 1979, deveria ficar desmilitarizada. Haveria na zona 800 soldados egípcios com a missão de lidar com eventuais distúrbios protagonizados por beduínos.

No fim de semana, 12 pessoas morreram em tiroteios entre beduínos e forças de segurança egípcias nessa península, perto da fronteira do Egito com a Faixa de Gaza, informaram meios da imprensa israelense e palestina.

O primeiro-ministro israelense, Benjamin Netanyahu, indicou na segunda-feira que nenhum dos dois países está interessado em retornar ao passado e que a política de Israel é preservar a paz com seu vizinho árabe.

Egípcios desafiam governo Mubarak

A onda de protestos dos egípcios contra o governo do presidente Hosni Mubarak, iniciados no dia 25 de janeiro, tomou nova dimensão na última sexta-feira. O governo havia tentado impedir a mobilização popular cortando o sinal da internet no país, mas a medida não surtiu efeito. No início do dia, dois mil egípcios participaram de uma oração com o líder oposicionista Mohamad ElBaradei, que acabou sendo temporariamente detido e impedido de se manifestar.

Os protestos tomaram corpo, com dezenas de milhares de manifestantes saindo às ruas das principais cidades do país - Cairo, Alexandria e Suez. Mubarak enviou tanques às ruas e anunciou um toque de recolher, o qual acabou virtualmente ignorado pela população. Os confrontos com a polícia aumentaram, e a sede do governista Partido Nacional Democrático foi incendiada.

Já na madrugada de sábado (horário local), Mubarak fez um pronunciamento à nação no qual ele disse que não renunciaria, mas que um novo governo seria formado em busca de "reformas democráticas". Defendeu a repressão da polícia aos manifestantes e disse que existe uma linha muito tênue entre a liberdade e o caos. A declaração do líder egípcio foi seguida de um pronunciamento de Barack Obama, que pediu a Mubarak que fizesse valer sua promessa de democracia.

O governo encabeçado pelo premiê Ahmed Nazif confirmou sua renúncia na manhã de sábado. Passaram a fazer parte do novo governo o premiê Ahmed Shafiq, general que até então ocupava o cargo de Ministro de Aviação Civil, e o também general Omar Suleiman, que inaugura o cargo de vice-presidente do Egito - posto inexistente no país desde o início do governo de Mubarak, em 1981.

Mubarak, à revelia da pressão popular que persiste nas cidades egípcias, ainda não deu sinais de que irá renunciar. No domingo, o presidente egípcio se reuniu com militares e anunciou a ampliação do toque de recolher, bem como o retorno da política antimotins para tentar conter as manifestações. E a a emissora Al Jazeera, que vinha cobrindo de perto os tumultos, foi impedida de funcionar.

Enquanto isso, a oposição segue se articulando em direção a um possível novo governo para o país. Em um dos momentos mais marcantes desde o início dos protestos, ElBaradei discursou na praça Tahrir e garantiu que "a mudança chegará" para o Egito. Já passam de 100 os mortos desde o início dos protestos, na última terça.

Egito restringe acesso à internet em dia de protesto

Internautas relataram terem ficado sem acesso à rede na madrugada desta sexta-feira (noite de quinta no Brasil) no Cairo, onde também há reclamações de que redes sociais como Twitter e Facebook voltaram a ficar inacessíveis e de restrições no envio de SMS. Quase ao mesmo tempo, horas antes do grande protesto contra o ditador Hosni Mubarak, unidades de elite da polícia começaram a se posicionar em locais estratégicos da capital egípcia.
