Sony Reader

Sony Reader rejected from the Apple App Store

Despite Sony’s confirmation that its Sony Reader e-book app would be coming to both Android and iOS, Apple has tightened its reigns once again, and has banned the app from heading to the App Store.

According to a report in the NYTimes, Apple’s reasoning was that it will no longer accept applications that permit in-app purchases of content that don’t go through the company itself, and that Sony’s Reader app is “too similar” to its proprietary iBooks application.

Steve Haber, president of Sony’s digital reading division, said: “It’s the opposite of what we wanted to bring to the market. We always wanted to bring the content to as many devices as possible, not one device to one store.”

The news comes as a bit of a shock, as with iOS 4.3, Apple is expected to launch a new in-app subscription service, which will see the Cupertino giant collaborating with publishers and magazine publishers. Maybe Apple will let Sony’s ebook app into the App Store if they change it to work with its new subscription service, although I wouldn’t go getting your hopes up.
